RETRENCHMENT.

EXPERTS IN AGRICULTURAL DEPARTMENT. Further l etrenchment details are announced in conne'etion with the Department of Agriculture. Notice of termination ot their engagements has been sent to Mr. D. D. Hyde, who has been Chief Poultry Expert for the past ten years, to Mr. W. Jaques, Fruit Preserving Expert for four years, and Mr. C. J. Fulton, Chief Fibre Expert, who has been connected with the department for the past ten years. The salaries of these three officers totals £1000 a year. In view of the fact that the control of dairy inspection has been taken over by the Dairy Commissioner, the services of most of the recently-appointed dairy inspectors arc also being dispensed with. Mr. Hyde has always taken a keen interest in poultry-breeding, and at one time was partner with Mr. Rogen in a poultry farm at Karori. Mr. Jaques many years held an important appointment in a fruit-pre-serving establishment, and was selected some four or five years ago by the late Mr. Seddon to come to New Zealand with 4 view to esetahlishing the industry here on a proper basis. Mr. Fulton is a Marlborongh native, and has been connected with the hemp industry practically . all his life. A year or two ago he went to St. Helena,' at the request of the Imperial authorities, in order to instruct the islanders as ti> the growing and treatment of flax for commercial purposes.
