In the House of Commons yesterday the second reading of the Finance Bill was agreed to after a vigorous attack by Mr. Balfour and a short spirited reply by Mr. Asquith. The voting was as follows : — 1 For the Bill 366 Against ■„.. 209 Government majority ... 15? Sixty-li.o Nationalist members voted with the minority. The Lord Mayor of Dublin, with the Sheriffs and Aldermen, in their robes of office, appeared at the Bar of the ! House to enter a protest against the Budget proposals. Four hundred Unionist amendments have been handed in, and many moreare being- prepared. LIBERAL OPPOSITION TO THE LAND TAX. LONDON, 11th June. The Daily Telegraph states that sixty Liberals arc likely to memorialise the Government to abandon the land tax. The Telegraph adds that it is understood I the official advisers of the Chancellor of ■ the Exchequer have always declared that the land proposals are impracticable and unworkable.
