«» The appointment of Mr. Thomas Young, solicitor, as consul for Japan in Wellington, is gazetted. A Colonial Auxiliary Forces long service medal has been awarded to Major C. D. Mackintosh, Ist Battalion Wellington Rifle Volunteers, twenty- j three years' service. J Mr. Wm. Franklin, overseer of the bindingroom of the Government Pr;nting Office, who is retiring from tho department after thirty-four years' service, was presented by the employees with a gold "watfh and chain. Mr. J. Mackay (Government Printer) and Mr. O. H. Broad referred to the respect and esteem in which the recipient was held by all departments in the office, ana wished him many years of leisure to enjoy his well-earned pension. Mr. Timothy Hayes, a resident of Wellington for about thirty years, died at his home in Aro-street on Wednesday from an attack of influenza, aged 74. The deceased, who was a contractor in Wellington, was engaged in. mining pursuits at Hokitika and Charleston beforo coming to this city, and hift faueral yesterday was attended by many old West Coasters. The Very Rev. Father O'Shea conducted a service at the Buckle-street Church, and also officiated at the graveside at Karoii. Mr. Hayes has left a widow a-ud a family of four. Mr. Alec Forrest's popularity with the staff of the Bank of New Zealand was yesterday evinced by their presenting him with a testimonial, consisting of a handsome silver salver and entree dish, suitably inscribed. The manager, Mr. Kane, made tho presentation. Regret was expressed at Mr. Forrest's enforced retirement on account of ill-health. For many years Mr. Forrest has held the responsible position in the .Wellington office of first teller, and earned the good opinion of all brought in contact with him. Last night's Gazette contains notification of the following Civil Service appointments : Mr. Peter Heyes, to be Valuer-General as from Ist June ; Mr. T. N. Brodrick to be Chief Surveyor for the Land District of Hawkes Bay, in the place of Mr. Henry Trent, who has retired; Mr. J. W. Davis to be Chief Draughtsman in the Head Office, Department of Lands, Wellington, as from Ist July ; Mr. M. C. Smith to be Chief Draughtsman in the District Office of the Department of Lands, Wellington, as from Ist July ; Mr. D. W. Gillies to be Chief Draughtsman in the Department of Lands, Nelson; Mr. G. H. M. M'Clnre to be Commissioner of Crown Lands for the Land District of Westland, in place of Mr. G. J. Roberts; Mr. G. A. L. Pauling to be District Land Registrar, Registrar of Deeds, Examiner of Titles, Deputy-Commis-sioner oi- Stamps, and Assistant-Registrar of Companies, at Napier ,- Mr. W. E. Butler to be Chief Clerk to tho Department of Defence.
