AMERICAN BOYS.

«^ TO TOUR NEW ZEALAND. In a month's .time a band of 40 American boys will arrive in New Zealand. They are coming from San Francisco, and bringing their brass band with them. They will tour New Zealand fiom Auckland to the Bluff before leaving for Australia where they will be the guests of the ¥oung Australia League. They are not rich boys— on tha contrary, the homes of most of them were burned out in the great earthquake of two years ago. Major Pcixotto, a San Francisco philanthropist is behind the young Cahfornians, and ha has definite, practical views on the subject of uplifting the city boy and him to abandon loafing on the street corners. The Major is a firm believer in Dr. Wai"s view, that Satan will find plenty of work for idle hands to do — especially ■ boys' hands. He has put his theories into practice : they have been an unqualified success. Mr. Garnet Holme, of Jesus College, Cambridge, an Englishman, is piloting the boys through Australasia. He ai rived by the Talune from San Francisco, via Papeete today. Mr. Holme was an instructor at j the celebrated university of California which is at, Berkley across the bay from San Francisco The boys, are known in a corporate stliso as the Columbia Park Club, and j the 40 lads who are coming this waydie merely delegates of a vast humanitarian organisation. One of the arlieliift in the Columbia Park creed is an annual walk of 500 miles through the Stale of California, either north or south. The boys give musical, dramatic, and gymnastic entertainments by way of self-support. This also — self-help — is another article of the club's creed. It is to be practised in New Zealand and Australia. One of the conditions of the Australasian tour was that each boy should be able to play a musical instrument. The band, judging by its performances in California, must be a good one. The well springs of San I'raneisco philanthropy appear to have Bhin almost dry except for the most urgent needs. This is a consequence of the great earthquake and its resultant suffering and poverty. Hence the bpys were glad to get the Australian invitation. The- band comes out with the benedic lion of Vrchbishop Reardon., Romun Catholic Bishop of Snn Francisco; Mr. Taylor, the anti-graft Mayor of th.-j city; the Cilifo r nian Promotion Committee; and the V.M.C.A. It is an entirely undenominational organisation.
