IN CHRISTCHURCH.

iBT TBLKGKAPH. — PRESS kSSOCIATION.I CHRISTCHURCH, 11th May. At the Supreme Court to-day, Christopher Isaac Denby, for some time stationmaster at Leeston, was found guilty on a charge of theft of goods consigned by Ballantyne and Co., to be delivered by the railway to a resident at Lincoln. The jury strongly recommended him to mercy. The prisoner's counsel, Mr. Donnelly, applied for probation, and referring to the report of the probation officer, said the statement therein contained that there had been other shortages at Leeston, which had stopped when accused had left, was, according to accused, not correct, and he desired Mr. Gray, the traffic manager, to be called to refute the statement. His Honour directed that the matter should be enquired into. Lucy Riley, on a charge of perjury, in having stated in the Magistrate's Court that a certain man was the father of her child, was found not guilty. Alexander Kiddey was charged with the killing of Edward Thomas Saunders, by striking him on the head with his fist at Sumner on 20th January. A verdict of guilty, with a recommendation to mercy, was returned. A sentence of six months was imposed. The hearing of the West Coast murder charge has been fixed for Monday next.

At the Mayoral installation at Ashburton, Mr. H. Friedlander stated that if the Sumner-Christchurch canal were constructed farmers would have to pay 3s 6d per ton for landing produce at the ship's side, while the cost at present at Lyttelton was only Is 6d per ton. He had always looked upon the farmers as being an intelligent body of men, and there was no need to wonder why they had so strenuously opposed the canal scheme. For CofcU in the Head and Influenza, Woodi' Gi-aat Foppermint Curs, 2i fid and 2s 6d per bottle.— Advt.
