KARORI BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The newly-elected Karori Borough Council held its first general meeting last evening. The following were present: — The Mayor (Mr. C. I. Dasent), Councillors Cathie, Spiers, Walmsley, Standon, Weiling, Hildreth, Burn, and Wedde. It was decided to forward to the Minister in Charge of the "Valuation Department a protest against the proposed alteration in regard to valuing whereby local bodies have to do the work for themselves. A number of minor road improvements and extensions were authorised, and it was decided to erect a concrete retaining wall in front of the council chambers to prevont further erosion of the bank. A sum of £16 10s was estimated as the cost. Tho engineer reported that the recreation ground works authorised on 14th April had been completed. The Bylaws Committee was instructed to consider and report upon the advisability of framing sanitary bylaws. In reply to a question by a councillor^ asking if the Finance Committee had. considered the question of obtaining a rebate from the City Council in connection with the lighting by arc lights, the property of the Karori Council, of the tramway tiack as far as the tunnel, the Mayor stated that the committee was considering the matter.
An old lady residing at. St. Ives, Paris, tho Comtesse de la Pommiere, not having been seen by her neighbours for some days, tho police entered her flat, and found her_ lying in a dying condition on a wretohed "mattress, surrounded by hundreds of rats. Strewn on the floor were bank notes and securities to the value of ovnr £6000, all half-eaten &w»y by rtte. The ComteEse was conveyed to hospital.
