N.Z. NATIVES' ASSOCIATION AND NATIVE BUSH.

« TO THE EDITOH. Sir, — In California there are two powerful associations which only the native-born can join. They aim at creating a national spirit, and seek to preserve everything native to the State, such as scenery, native bush, or forest. One ! association is called the "Native Sons of California," and the other the " Native Daughters of. California." They have a lodge or branch in every town in the ( State, and do a deal of good in getting | the rising race to care for their country's gifts. I wish to suggest, sir, that the Wellington Scenery Preservation Society I approach the executive of the New Zealanders' Association, and ask that vigorous body (which is composed of gentlemen ivho are true patriots) to take up t4ie^ (fuestion of getting our bare barren billiard-board-burnt-up Town Belt planted with native trees, and also seek to find out the Maori names of prominent places, like Somes and Ward Islands. — I am, etc., A NATIVE.

The Hon. Jas. Carroll, who is at present in Gisborne, will remain in the Poverty Bay district for' a couple of weeks. Interviewed by a Herald reporter in Gisborne, the Minister predicted a heavy, fighting, wrangling session. "Firebrands" that have been j returned will, he thinks, have to. live up to their reputation, whilst the Opposition declarations that ihey were going to make things merry carried, he supposed, a certain arfiount of purpose. The session will not see any special Native i legislation, although legislative adjust- [ nibnt to meet requirements and facilitate the working of the machinery of his department would probably be brought down. Questioned respecting the repeated rumours, generally emanating from Auckland, regarding his probable retirement from the Cabinet for a seat i i the Upper House, the Native Minister replied that these lumours were doubtless based on the imagination of those who made them, and with whom the wish was father to the thought. The ambition of these people, he added with a smile, was to be ahead of realisation. Messrs. A. L. Wilson and Co. advertise particulars of coming auction sales. Tomorrow, at 1.30 they will offer at their rooms, 26, Brandon -street, six piauos of English and Continental make. The same afternoon they will submit a varied catalogue of furniture and effects. On Thursday, at 1.30 (hey will sell, on account of Mr. J. Marlow, nt his residence, 4, Pittstreet, Berhampore, the contents of four rooms. A preliminary notice also appears of a sale of furniture on the premises, 3, South-avenue, to take place ~on Friday next, at 1.30. The same firm insert par-" ticulara of a clearing sale of dairy stock and implements they are holding at the farm of Mr. Victor F. Hughes, Johnsonville (Uto Mm. J»ickoji'») # en Monday nwt, »t 12.30 sharp.
