A broad nint was given, at a meeting of the City Council as constituted before last month's municipal elections, that, in the matter of future negotiations to acquire the Wellington gasworks as a municipal venture, tho council would have an advantage fiom the necessity of the Gas Company having to acquire permission from the council to run connecting mains from its new gasometer at Miramar (through what was formerly a part of Melrose borough, but is now in Gi eater Wellington) to the city. The company is understood to contend that the council must grant the application, either of free will or by compulsion of the courts. The Gas Committee of the council has been approached on the matter., and at a meeting held yesterday afternoon a short discussion took place. Nothing was decided upon, however, the newly-constituted committee being desirous of gaining further information before tckiug a definite step.
