LONDON MARKETS.

I HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable message from the High Commissioner, dated London, Bth May: — There has been no alteration in the mutton market since last week. The market is demoralised, and supply exceeds demand. On the 26th April mutton was quoted as follows: — Canterbury 3d, North Island 2Jd per lb. The lamb market is steadier, with a better demand on account of low prices. The output is steadily increasing, but the stock is heavy. Current quotations are — Canterbury lamb, 4jjd per lb; other than Canterbury, 4id ; Australian, 3^d. At a meeting of importers for the consideration of the unsatisfactory state of the meat market, it was decided that nothing can be done, the position being caused entirely by excessive supplies. There is a better demand for beef. Hindquarters, are quoted at 3Jd, and forequarters at 2^d per lb. The butter market is steady, and puces N are well maintained. Choicest New Zealand is quoted at 101s; Danish ICOs; Siberian, 975; Australian, 98s; Argentine, 99s per cwt. The cheese market is firm, and there are small supplies on hand. White makes are quoted at 625, and coloured at 64s per cwt. The hemp market is quiet, with small business, doing. The following are the current quotations; — Good fair grade on spot, £23; fair grade on spot, £21 15s; fair current Manila on spot, £21 10s. May to July shipments are quoted as follows": —Good fair grade. £22 15s; fair grade, £21 15s; fair current Manila, £20 10s. La&t week's Manila output amounted to 26,000 balea. Stock held in London is 20-1 tons. ( The cocksfoot seed market is quiet and uncertain. Buyers are not keen to do business in cocksfoot seed at the present Dricc of 75s for bright clean 171b 6eed. The wheat market is very uncertain ; speculation affects the market very serioufly, and prospects are uncertain. The market is firm at present. New Zealand long-berried wheat, on spot, ex granary per quarter of 4961b5, 45s 6d ; New Zealand short-berried wheat, on spot ox granary, per quarter of 5961b5, 44s 6d. The oat market remains firm. New Zealand short «Sf)arrowbill oats, ex granary, on spot, per quarter of 3841b5, 265 ; New Zealand Danish oats, ex granary on spot per quarter, of 3201b5, 20^ The bean market remains firm owing to reduced supplies. New Zealand beans, (f.a.q. old crop), per 5041b, 35s 6d. Tho neas market is firm, with more enquiry. Supplies do not meet requirements, and holders ace linn New Zealand partridge peas, per 5041b5, 47s 6d. The hop market is firmer, and stock is being reduced. The following shipments arrived from the River Plato during the month of April: — London, 190,516 carcases mutton, 48,058 carcases lamb; Liverpool. 129,289 carcases mutton 33,430 carcases lamb; Hull, 7771 carcases mutton, 1322 carcases luinb; Newcastle, 23,338 carcases mutton, 3i6G carcases lamb ; Glasgow, 2813 carcass mutton ; Southampton. 8369 carcases iT.utlon, 2470 carcases lamb; Ireland, 2495 carcases mutton, 335 carcases lamb ; Cardiff, 13,450 carcases mutton, 1439 carcases lamb. Butter — Liverpool ana Southampton. 31,289 cwt.
