GLASGOW MURDER.

DEATH SENTENCE PASSED. Bt Telegraph. -Press Aasociation.--Copyright. (Received May 8, 8.10 a.m.) LONDON, 7th May. Oscar Slater has been sentenced to death for murdering Miss Gilchrisfc in a Glasgow flat on 2lst December last. Miss Gilchrist, a maiden lady of 80 years, was found murdered at her home at Queen s-terrace, Princes-street, Glasgow, at 7 o'clock on the evening of 21st December. Her head was beaten in beyond recognition. A servant girl, with whom she lived alone, went out for an evening paper, and on her return found her mistress lying on the hearthrug in the dining-room. Miss Gilchrist was a lady of considerable wealth. She had always had a fear of burglars, and, curiously enough, one of the precautions she institutod was brought into play on the fatal night and just failed of success. With Mr. Adams, who lives in the flat underneath Miss Gilchrist's, she arranged that on any occasion when she had particular fears or required assistance she would knock three times on the floor when he was to come to her assistance. Something of this nature happened, but as the knocking continued beyond three times Mr. Adams thought it must be the servant girl breaking firewood. His sister, however, insisted on his going upstairs to see if anything was wrong, and when he did so he met the servant girl returning at the same moment. As they reached the door of Miss Gilchrist's flat a man coolly walked out past them and down the stairs. The girl was the first to enter, and immediately returned screaming, "My mistress is murdered." Mr. Adams made a dash downstairs after the man, but lost sight of him in the. darkness. A box in Miss Gilchrist's bedroom had been forced open and a number of" papers, rings, and gold watches were found on the floor.
