BLAZE AT PALMERSTON.

{BT TELEGBAFH — I-BESS ASSOCIATION.! PALMERSTON N., This Day. Shortly before midnight last night, a fire broke out in Malcolm's furnishing warehouse in the Square. It started in a workshop at the back, where there were large quantities of tow and var--Jsh. For some time the blaze was confined t6 one corner of the building, but columns of black fcmoke rising from the roof told of the hold the flames had within. The brigade commenced operations from the rear, and, though at one time it looked as if the fire • would spread, the firemen managed to confine it to Malcolm's premises. This was practically destroyed at the rear, the frontage being less damaged. The whole of the stock, valued at £4000, was seriously injured by fire and water. The brigade worked hard and well, but it was not till ab"but 1 a.m. that the fire was extinguished.. The building belonged to Mr. Childs, of the Commercial Hotel, who had only recently acquired it. It was insured for £750 in the Alliance office. The stock was insured for £1850 — £500 each in the New Zealand, Norwich Union, and Standard offices, and £350 in the Alliance. The Standard office next door was uninjured.
