MONEY LYING UNCLAIMED.

An application was made by Mr. 0. Beere, in chambers yesterday, before Mr. Justice Cooper, under the Public Works Act, 1908, on behalf of Eparaima Takarangi and Tupoki Takarangi, that a sum of £1000 — compensation moneys for lands taken for railway purposes, being part subdivision 12, of section 3, Hutt — which sum had been paid by the Crown into the Public Trust office, be paid out to the natives interested. His Honour remarked that the money had been deposited nearly five years ago, and it was curious that no application had been made previously for the money. Mr. Beere explained that the natives resided in Parihaka, and had been under the influence of the prophet Te Whiti, and had for many years refused to receive any moneys payable to them. "The prophet being now dead, the natives* appear to be waking up," commented his Honour. The matter was held over until the return of the Crown solicitor, Mr. Myers.
