REPUBLIC OF CUBA.
EVACUATED BY AMERICAN TROOPS. By Telegr»ph.— Prees Association.- -"Copyright. (Received January 26, 8. 2J5 a.nif) NEW YORK, 25th January.. The last detachment of tihn American army of occupation has left Cuba. After the Spanish-American War an army of occupation was left in temporary charge of the Poarl of the Antilles, but it was not till early in 1901 that a Constitution was finally adopted, under which tihe island was given a republican form of government, with a president, a v tee-president, a Senate, and a House of Representatives. On the 20th May the government \yas formally made over to the Republic, of which President Palma became the first head. In 1906 a revolution broke out, aiijcj 1 the President resigned office. No sajccessol- was appointed, and, as Cuba was without a Government, Mr. W. H. Taft, the i United States Commissioner, undertook the provisional goveamment. He was succeeded by Mr. C E. Magoon, but it is probable that a new Cuban Government will be formed in the spring of this year, after a new Congress has been elected, and a new President installed. The American army of occupation has been gradually reduced during the last few years. |
