HOW THE REPUBLIC SANK.
NARROW ESCAPE OF THE CREW IN" CHARGE. (Received January 26, 8.25 a.m.) NEW YORK, 25th January. While being towed the Republic suddenly sank stern first. Captain Sealby and a small crew who were on board were forced to swim or cling to debris. They were rescued with great difficulty by boats belonging to the steamer Gresham. Captain Sealby was clinging to a grating, and was almost exhausted.
