LOCAL SELF-GOVERNMENT WANTED. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright. (Received January 26, 9.43 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. News from Noumea states that a large meeting had been held at which it was .resolved to demand local self-govern-ment. Political opinion aims at the abolition of the tariff, and the opening up of ao Australian trade. New Caledonia is a French posses, sion and penal settlement, having a population in 1906 of _ 53,346— 22,177 whites, and the rest natives. Of the whites^ rather over 7000 were convicts. The island is administered by a Governor, assisted by a council of official member 3, and an elective Council-General.
