LYNCH LAW.
"NIGHTRIDERS" ON TRIAL OVER A HUNDRED INDICTMENTS. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright. (Received December 16, 8.40 a.m.) NEW YORK, 15th December. The trial of many "nightriders" has begun at Unison City, Tennessee. There are a hundred and twenty-five indictmeuts for capital offences. "The nightriders" in Tennessee were dissatisfied with legislation regulating the fishing at ReelfooJ Lake. In October last two lawjyers who were visiting- the lake for the purpose of leasing surrounding land, were dragged from their !h«tel by masked "nightriders," and one of them hanged to a tree. His companion jumped into the water and escaped to safety while his captors were deliberating whether to kill him or extort concessions in the shape of free fishing. Many lives have also been lost m the adjoining State of Kentucky, u^ere the "nightriders" came into existence as the result of trouble between, tobacco growers and the trust. The growers bitterly resent the passing, as it is alleged, of the leaf tobacco market in the States of Kentucky and Tennessee, from which I England and Italy annually get enor- ; mous supplies, into the hands of the Tobacco Trust, and, by all sorts of ostracism, whippings, raidings, and persecutions, have been punishing t!hp growers who have yielded to the trust.
