OBITUARY.

_* [BY; TELEGRAPH— ritESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, This' Day. The death is announced of Mr. Closs, for many ysars headmaster of Alexandra School, who only last week retired from the service owing to ill-health. His son is medical officer to the Auckland Hospital, and his brothers are Dr. Closs, Dunedin, and Rev. Closs, Congregational Church, Christchurch.

One of the Otekaike settlers (says th« Timaru Herald) sold his wool as it came off tho sheeps' back at 9jd per lb on the farm, this price being free of commission or any other charges. The buyer was a Timaru wool dealer. Another step towards the completion of the new Otago dock was effected on Monday, when the caisson was floated into position. Before swinging the caisson (which resembles a stoutly'built iron barge) into its place, the contractors took the precaution to send a diver down, when it Was found that some evilly-dis-posed person had deposited a cement sack, filled with large stones, fairly on the dock sill on the south side, its bulk and position being quite sufficient to prevent tho caisson from fitting in its proper place. This, of course, would have prevented the proper closing of the dock entrance, and the pumps would have been unable to pump the dock dry. The contractors are to be complimented (says tho Otago Daily Times) upon their foresight in preventing the possibility of very serious complications. Meesra. Herdroan and Kirkcnldie notify in our culvnrtiainj* oelumua -that they havo removed to new offices in BaUauos-stieet. <
