LAWN TENNIS. [BY HUKA.]

The following notes were' crowded out J of last Saturday's issue:— . . The cup contests, Karon v. Victoria ' College and Brougham Hill v. Hutt were ' close and interesting, but in the other two Newtown defeated B.H. B team easily, ' and Wellington had not much opposition j from Petone. , Putnam and Douglas, although beating Smith and Eichelbaum respectively in the singles, somehow went to pieces in the doubles, and allowed Victoria College players to score a good win. The Victoria College ladies were both badly beaten in their singles, yet they had a runaway victory 'in the doubles from their previous victors. The college put up a fine fight in the ladies' doubles, and the combined, securing the lot. Misses M'Kellar and Cox nave gone off 'in their single play; both these young ladies promised well last season, but want of good singles practice seems to have put them back, whereas both should have qualified for senior places according to tho form shown last year. Tburnament play, and plenty of it will bring them forward quite fifty per cent., as both have the dash if they care to try. Misses Saxdn and Atkinson are moving steadily along, and the writer expects to see an improvement. Brougham Hill and the Hutt had a neck and neck race ; it was a fine finish; the former team only just won. Hutt has since been awarded the match because Brougham Hill played a lady who had not been granted permission to play as a junior. Walkins again made one of liis sensational finishes, and just defeated Percy Jackson. Lawrence, by his win from Clere, proves that ho is still in good form ; he can do even better with a little more condition. Callen- 1 dar had Marriner right out. Tho letter appears to be suffering from want of condition. The Hutt ladies outclassed their opponents, but Miss Archer, with Herd, and Mibs Dempsey with O'Loary, played well to win the combined doubles. The Heaton brothers aro not severe enough for combined events. Nowtown led Brougham Hill B team a great dance. Hurley very nigh killed Nagle in a match that took something like two hours to play. Nagle won. but had enough, and did not turn up for tho doubles. Veen did well to get six games from Redward. Jones arid Williams had a good fight; the latter appeared to be winning, but Jones camo with a determined run, evened at 8 all, and won. Misses Webb and Crombie played splendidly against Mrs. Grady and Miss Clark, surprising allcomers by winning 7—5.7 — 5. Miss Webb gave Mrs. Grady a great battle, the latter having to do her best to win, 7—5.7 — 5. The Newtown combined doubles had easy wins. • In the Wellington-Petone contest, Hawkins beat Fernie comfortably. M'NieoJ } romped over Green ; the latter has lost ! all his form this season, but ho should win it all back boforo long. Cornell and Sheppard were well matched, and it was anybody's set almost to tho finish. Missea Dimant and Mrs. Pierard did well to beat such a strong combination as Mrs. Hawkins and Miss Penny. In the pennant matches nothing out of the way took *place. Brougham Hill, Victoria College and Victoria College B had wins from Wellington, Newtown, and I Muritai respectively. Trinity A and B teams scored wins in the racket competition from Kilbirnie and Victoria College B respectively. The wins were easy ones. Tudhope fodght hard for Victoria College against Dick, and, with Oram, showed a bold front in the doubles. Victoria College defaulted two sets. N. Mitchell went gamely for a win for Kilbirnie, but found a hard nut in Fathers; the latter won 9—B.9 — 8. Miss Crisp all but secured a win against Miss Hayes; the latter plajs woll. but should watch the ball closer. Bidwill : street A can thank its ladies for beating Kilbirnie. Everything rested on the double, Hamilton and Pavitt v. Mitchell and" Drummond. Experience pulled the match off, but with a shade of luck the hitter pair would have won. It was any one's set at 8 all. College A put Bidwill B out, but, the match was closer than the score denotes. The ladies' single, 'and the third men's single might oasily have gone to the losers. The ladies' doubles and combined were won on the post by the losers. Miss Cunningham, of Bidwill-street A team comes from Wanganui; she played at the last Wellington tournament.

The space behind tho base Ifnes at the Day's Bay courts is very cramped, and it would be wiser for tho association to have less courts, with inoro room. Even for the young player who docs not think it necessary, it would be advisable, as it 'is very apt to produce an army of j cramped players.
