OBITUARY.
A -WELL-KNOWN JAPANESE ADMIRAL. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright TOKIO, 30th October. The death has occurred of Count Goinbei Yamamoto, the distinguished Admiral of the Japanese Navy, at the age of fifty-six. Count Yamamoto, ex-Minister of the Japanese Navy, was born at Satsuma. Entering the navy, he became a lieuten- , ent in 1880, and a captain in 1886, commanding respectively me Takao, Takachiho, and other vessels. He was appoiuted private secretary to the Minister of the Navy, and in 1896, being then vice-president ot the Navy, was promoted rear-admiral. From 1898 to 1906 he was Minister. He was created a Baron in 1902. Yamamoto is said to have greatly influenced his colleagues in the Katsura Cabinet and " Elder Statesmen " in regard to adopting a resolute attitude in connection with RussoJapan&se negotiations, which led to Japan anticipating her adversary by commencing hostilities. For his services during the war he was created a Count.
