Two tramway employees, Rcuss and Spry, who refused to participate in the recent strike, were yesterday presented by the secretary of the Employers' Association with £118 12s 6d, subscribed as a recognition of the spirit of devotion which actuated them. SUPREME COURT SENTENCES. . THE HIGHWAY ROBBERS. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. In the Supreme Court to-day the highway robbers were sentenced as follows :— Joseph Johnstone, five years' ; Frank Bolton, four years; and James Keegan one year. William Bell, from the lower court, for breaking, entering and theft was sentenced to six months' imprisonment. His Honour said the case was not •serious. John Pearson was charged with using an instrument for an unlawful purpose. On this and on further counts alleging misrepresentation and indecent assault, he pleaded not guilty. The case is proceeding. DIVORCE. DUNEDIN, This Day. In the Divorce Court, in Stuart v. Stuart, wife's petition on ground of desertion, a decree nisi was granted. SMUGGLED SHAWLS. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Thomas William Bates, a joiner from the steamer Mamari, was this morning ordered to pay £3, the value of four shawls smuggled ashore by him from the steamer, and also 12s duty. He said he had paid only 10s for the shawls at Teneriffe, but the Commissioner of Customs assessed their value at £1 12s. l> When asked if any . uncustomed goods were in his possession, Bates told the Customs officer he had only half a crown's worth of tobacco. I MAN SEVERELY INJURED. GISBORNE, This Day. * On the Tyser i steamer Indradevi this morning a seaman named George Lambert, whilst working the cargo, fell down the hatch, a distance of 30ft, and sustained severe injuries. He was sent to the hospital. CHARGE OF ATTEMPTED MURDER. DUNEDIN, This Day. John Webster, charged with attempting to murder George Hubbard, 1 his brother-in-law, was remanded till Thursday.
