THE PRESIDENCY.
MR. BRYAN'S CANDIDATURE. .By Ttlerrtph.— Press Aesoolstion.— Ooorrich*/ . NEW YORK, 20th August. The New York World supports Mr. W. J. Bryan -in his candidature for -the* Presidency. It describes the issue as that oorf r "the democracy versu3 the plutocracy." The most ■ important ■ portion of Mfc,» Maurice Low's summary of the history of American affaire during the month of June, in the National Review, is the»: statements it contains with respect to 5 the desperate extremity to winch theDemocratic Party in the United States has been reduced during the last ten years. This fact is revealed by one--•yery remarkable circumstance, and that, is "tho almost total extinction of the, democratic press in certain parts of the, country, and especially in the north■west." There is no longer a newspaper 1 representing the opinions of this section of the body politic in Michigan, Wisconsin, lowa, Minnesota, or Nebraska., Even Chicago, a city of 2,000,000 inhabitants, which once supported two powerful democratic papers, now has> none, and the States above enumerated "have to rely on Republican newspapers foi* their interpretation of current- ! events. Is it any wonder," asks Mr., | Low, "that politically the country has J become one-sided, or that there is no. longer a fighting opposition?"
