fPBESS ASSOCIATION.] HUSBAND WITH A REVOLVER. DUNEDIN, 20th August. Shortly before 8 o'clock to-night a man named John Webster, who about ten days ago was bound over to keep tho peace inwards his wife, attempted — it is alleged — to shoot George Hubbard, his brother-in-law. Hubbard had heard that Webster, with a. revolver, was looking for Mrs. Webster, so he followed Webster up, and overtaking him asked him what he was doing with a revolver, whereupon Webster fired a shot at him, the bullet paesing between Hubbard's legs. Hubbard then grabbed Webster, who is a small man, and held him until the police arrived, when he was taken into custody on a charge of diecharging a firearm at Hubbard with intent to do him grievous bodily harm. TWO ACQUITTALS. DUNEDIN, 20th August. In the charge of manslaughter against Cornish the jury returned a verdict of not guilty. CHRISTCHURCH, 20th August. Beatrice Toofee, on a charge of causing actual bodily harm, was acquitted. SOCIALIST CANDIDATE. CHRISTCHURCH, 20th August. Mr. James Thorn has been announced by the Political La-bour League as a Socialist candidjite for Christchurch South. Mr D. Q. Sullivan is to be asked to stand- for Avon in the same interests. The secretary of the league has been instructed to make enquiries as to the cost of maintaining a labour newspaper during the election period. ASSAULTED WITH A STICK. CHRISTCHURCH, 2dth August. Early yesterday morning a- young man. named Denis Bock was taken to the hospital suffering from several severe wounds on tho head, which he stated had been inflicted with a stick by an assailant in the street. CARGO BROACHING. AUCKLAND, 20th August. Th« losses occasioned to importers through the pillaging of cargo were referred to by Messrs. Ellis and Co. in a letter to the Chamber of Commerce, in which it was suggested that subscriptions should be invited from importers in Auckland and a fund established, co that a reward of up to £25 might ba offered for information leading to the conviction oi* the pilferers. It was decided to reply that the chamber understood the Harbour Board and the Justice Department were taking special steps in connection with the matter, and the question of a fund might be l^ft in abeyance in tho meantime. ,
