THE EDUCATION BILL.
STATEMENT BY MR. T. MACKENZIE. [Bf Tkugbaph Special to Thb Post.] DUNEDIN, This Day. Speaking at, tho Education Board's meeting yesterday, Mr. T. Mackenzie, who is a member of the Parliamentary Committee to whom the Education Amendment Bill has been referred, said, in respect to that measure, that one was not allowed to divulge anything that took place on a Parliamentary committee — a very foolish provision, he thought, in view of the fact that so many people were interested in the Bill, and wished to know what was being done with it. Tb.9 Bill was practically almost through committee now. He thought he was safe in saying that hardly any of these very able suggestions mentioned were likely to find embodiment in the Bill. He mentioned this much, and this much only, for two reasons — (1) So that people might know that they need not give themselves much more trouble in seeking to get alterations made, and (2), because he did not wish to say anything that would reflect on the Minister of Education. "Wo all appreciate," he continued, "what the Minister and the Government have done to set up the smaller schools. I can only express some little regret that when this opportunity opened up the matter \vt> had not a greater chance of making the measure more perfect and of bringing it more up to requirements. Howover, Mr. Fowlds felt that if a lot of amendments wero proposed it would stop the Bill going through this ses■sion." Ipbess association.! DUNEDIN, 19th August. The Otago Education Board endorsed the Wellington Board's resolution re amending the Education Bill in the direction of making attendance daily compulsory, and also the North Canterbury's suggestion amending the syllabus in the direction of securing fuller attention to English, grammar, and geography. The Hon. T. Fergus was elected chairman.
