After swimming for many hours Burgess was within a mil© of Grisnez, when an adverse tide compelled him to abandon his attempt to swim the Channel. T. W. Burgess has made several attempts to swim the Channel, one of his beet being on 31st August, 1906, wften he covered 42 miles in 18 hours 1 minute. Captain Matthew Webb in 1875. swam from Dover to Calais in 21 hours • 45 minutes. The distance is approximately 26 miles, but adverse tides would mean that a swimmer would have to cover a greater distance than that.
