LOCAL AND GENERAL. » At to-day's meeting of the StocK Exchange, the principal feature was the pronounced fall in Talisman quota-* i tions, which for some days past have ruled about £2 7s buyers and £2 7s 6d sellers, with a fair quantity of scrip changing hands at those rates. To-I day it came as a surprise to find the buying quotation reduced to £2 2s 6d, and that scrip was being offered for sale ior a shilling more. It appears that Auckland operators still regard this scrip with no friendly eye, and. are making capital of the fact that' water has again put a stop to the de-» velopment work in the lowest leveL Meanwhile Wellington sellers appear to have withdrawn from the market, evidently awaiting a definite official announcement from the recently-appointed Local Comsnittee, which has thus early; an opportunity of proving its valuej Waihi shares were sold at £9 5s 6d, . Waiotahi 2s Bd, and Tangiaro at Is 6d. In the investment section Port Chalmers Gas found a buyer at £1, and D.I.C. preference at £1 2s. Sellers of Wellington Gas, £5 paid up, increased their price to £11 ss. Other quotations were without any material change. The postal authorities advise that aa; English and Vancouver mail is coming through from Auckland by the express, train to-night. The return journey of the througK train from Auckland to Wellington over the North Island Main Trunk Railway, with the Parliamentary party on board, was made successfully, the train reach* ing Wellington at' 6.10 last night— < schedule time. The trip was most enjoyable, and was completed practically without a hitch. The time occupied in the through trip was nineteen and three* quarter hours, and it is considered thab when the line is in full running order no difficulty will be experienced in com-, pleting the journey in nineteen hours. "Welcome rains have been falling fo^ two days, after a dry spell," says a Nelt son Press Association telegram to-day. Messrs. DaJgety and Co. have in«. s'tructed Messrs. Crichton and M'Kajr^ architects, to prepare plans for a brick and steel building to be erected at the corner of Featherston and Waring Taylor streets. The building will have at frontage of 50 feet to Featheraton-street* and 90 feet to Waring-Taylor-strcel, and will consist of three stories with a base* ment. Mr. T. M. Wiifrrd, M.P. S received! the following telegram yesterday, signed by Taekata Tenaera, Waharoa, Win 1 Ratete, Tai Michell, Rev. F. Bennett, and Rev. Timutimi Ropere : — "As representing the natives in the Rotorua dis* trict, we desire to express our apprecia*: tion of your services in championing ouft cause. Do your utmost for us.' 1 At eight minutes past 1 o'clock thid morning the Fire Brigade was called td a cottage in Daniel-street (No. 74), own* ed by Mr. E. J. Howan, and occupied byj Mrs. O'Flaherty. The wall paper in a back, bedroom had been accidentally set) . on fire through a lighted candle coming into contact with it.
