UPPER HUTT MATTERS.
Conversing with several of the Upper Hutt Town Commissioners and the town clerk, a representative of The Post gathered that ere Jong proposals for lighting that district with acetylene gas will be submittpd to the ratepayers. The scheme will include taking over the geneiating apparatus of the six existing private installations, and in addition to street lighting, providing the illuminant to all stores, churches and private houses as^ required, together with the railway offices and signals, if desired. On the new valuation, our representative Was given to understand, the rate required to provide interest and sinking fund would not exceed one-twelfth of a penny, but the profit obtained from supplying private consumers would probably render it unnecessary to even collect that amount. A number of occupiers of business premises and dwellinghouses have already informed the town clerk they will have acetylene laid on from the Town Board mains when installed. Despite the unfavourable weather, there was a good attendance of members of the Upper Hutt Social Club at the special general meeting held at the clubroom on Saturday evening. Mr. R. H. Williams, town commissioner, presided in the unavoidable absence of the chairman of the Management Cdmmittee. The secretary reported upon the membership of tho club, and stated that in consequence of the increase it would be necessary to add three members to the Management Committee — being one for each ten members in excess of 50 — Messrs. Hotchen, T. M'Kay and Pratt were nominated by tho committee, and were unanimously elected by the meeting. For the office of club president Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.P., was elected unopposed. The members by resolution adopted Mr. Wilford's colours — pink and white — as the club colours. The club's first quarterly concert ih aid of the piano fund was announced to take place on Saturday, when a number of artists from Wellington and elsewhere will appear boforo an Uooer Hutt nudiftnw for ihe firjil* timft.
