RECORD SHIPMENT FROM GISBORNE. [BY TELEGBAPH. — PBESS ASSOCIATION.] GISBORNE, 23rd May. The Tyser steamer Niwaru completes loading to-day the largest single shipment of frozen meat ever exported from Gisborne, totalling over forty-three thousand carcases qf mutton from Nelson Bros.' works. This considerably exceeds the total shipments made in 1890, the first year the freezing industry was established here.

At the fortnightly meeting of the New Zealand Society for the Protection of Women and Children, held on Friday, the chair was occupied by Mrs. W. A. Evans, and there were also present Mother Aubert, Mesdames Darvall and Hoby. A number of cases of undesirable home surroundings of children were brought under the notice of the society. One case of maintenance was satisfactorily settled ; some others are being dealt with. The following subscriptions were acknowledged : — Mr. C. B. Morison, £1 ; Mrs. Hunter Jack, £1; Dr. A.
