SATURDAY'S RACING DESCRIPTION OF THE WANGANUI STEEPLECHASE. [By TEL-EGitArH.— Special to The Post.] WANGANUI, 23rd May. Glorious weather prevailed for the steeplechase meeting, and the tracks were in perfect order. The scratchings of Faro and Cloudy Morn left a field of nine in the big cross-country event. In the paddock Eurus, Kaipetipeti, Tilson, and Nadador looked the fittest of the field. Romany King moved very scratchiiy in his preliminary, and Fretwork looked short of «i few gallops. Kaipetipeti's owner was confident the black gelding would run prominently, and he was favourite both with the bookmakers and the totalisator, Kurus and Nadador also being well backed, none of the others receiving much support. Rangitoto was the first to show in front, and led over the gorse, followed by Canton and Tilson, with Eurus, Nadador, ,and Kaipetipeti next. At the span, tho second jump, Canton toppled over and brought Eurus down, Fretwork following suit. Down the back, Rangitoto drew out, closely pursued by Tilson. At the half-mile Tilson went to the front. Passing the stand the order was Tilson, Kaipetipeti, Nadador, Rangitoto, and Arahura, with Romany King tailing off. Racing down the back and into the straight, Tilson, pulling double, was a couple of lengths ahead of Kaipetipeti, with Rangitoto and Nadador close together, next. Passing the stand the second time, Romany King pulled up. Six furlongs from home Hall sent Kaipetipeti along, and at the double biush ho passed Tilson and kept his advantage of a length until two furlongs from home, when Tilson shot to the front, with Nadador and Rangitoto many lengths away third and fourth-. Arahura, who was running fifth, came down heavily at the hencoop at the corner. Tilson cleared tho last jump in great style, and won by three lengths, Nadador six lengths further away, with Rangitoto on her quarters. None of the others finished. OTHER NOTES. In the May Hurdles the big Gold Reef gelding jumped in his old style, and was never headed. Immolation got to within two lengths, but Aeolus, although jumping better, did not finish with any resolution. Waipu and Defeat were all the rage in the Hack Hurdles, but made no show at all. The Stake, a comparative outsider, led all the way, and nothing could extend him at the finish. The Stako does not incur any penalty in the Century Hurdles. King Billy got chopped out at the start, Connolly, Kairoma, and Daisy iPaul getting well away. After disposing of Kairoma, who only lasted seven furlongs, Daisy Paul stalled off a tremendous run by King Billy, who only emerged from the ruck half a mile from tome. , Little Mary, who is a much improved | mare, won the Borough Handicap fairly comfortably. Irish Rifle and Motoa goi» a bad run, but finished together, fourth and fifth. Erl King was galloping strongly at the finish of the Electric Hack. Penates and Advantage wore head and head ; the latter had a nasty bump coming round the home turn. Lothair was. a close fourth. Waikaraka, stable companion of The Stake, after < many disappointments, scored in nice j style in the Purua Hack, and paid a good dividendl * CONCLUDING RESULTS. [B'Z TELEGBAPH.
