(Received May 23, 10.0 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day Steps are being taken to secure commutation of the sentence of death pasBed on Manning for the murder of hia wife near Bendigo. A daughter of the condemned man declares that her father is not insane, but that it pays him to be" insane just now. She asks : "If he was insane he would have killed my mother at home arid not lured her /io a lonely Epot." She adds : "1 think he should be hanged — the wicked man. I do not care what becomes of him so long as he is not let, out. Hanging would be a just punishment. He has broken up our home and taken the life of v loving mother and a good wife."
The murder was committed in February last. Manning lured his wife away from nome in order to kiU her. After the murder he tried to take his own life. He is an old man.
