VICTORIA COLLEGE.

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The Council of Victoria College met last evening, Mr. T. E. Fleming presiding. Thero were also present Dr. Knight, Messrs. C. Wilson. A. W. Hogs;, M.1., C. R. Watson, 11. F. Yon Haaot, F. P. Wilson. W. H. Quick, A. E. Meek, Rev. W. A. Evans. , THE LIBRARY. At was decided to thank Lady Hector /for her offer to the library of a collection of the Proceedings of the Eoyal Society and to inform her that the matter was still under consideration. Tha council expressed its thanks to Miss Izard for liar offer of a collection of books, the property of her father, the late Dr. Izard, for' the college library. ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE. In consequence of the growth of the. Latin and English classes, it was moved by Re-v. • Evans that the matter of odditiona' assistance m teaching Lat.m and English be- referred to the Finance Committee to report to the council. Mr. F. P. Wilson maintained that the matter should not bo delayed for any fength of time. It was impossible for any one man to do justice to a class of over 100 students. Dr. Knight thought that to decide such an important matter at siich u> small meeting would be a scandalous breach of privilege. 'The Rev. Evans's motion was carried. FINANCE. The financial statement was brought up and showed general accounts and salaries passed for payment, £944 18s 6d; laboratory account, £42 5s 6d. General account, balance at bank, £1239 5s la (less building account £8 11s 7d) £1230 13s 6d. On deposit, £2000. Laboratory account, balance in bank, £.216 16s 3d; 'payments as above £122 5s 6d. On deposit, £1030, balance £104 ,10s -9d. Statutory grant to be received from Government, £1500. , RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS. Miss Clara Taylor, of Victoria College, was the only candidate offering and nominated by a committee of the Professorial Board for the Government Resep.rch Scholarship of £100 a year and laboratory fees. She was recommended by Professors Kirk and Easterfield. 'Mr. yon Haast said ha doubted if the scholarship was sufficiently known by the public. All that had been done to give it publicity was^a notice posted up in the college. Rev. -W. A. Evans thought wider publicity should be given. The chairman said he was not quito clear about it himself, but the pro 1--'1 --' fessors were fully seized of all who had passed ' through the college. Mr. Quick suggested circularising all who were eligible. It was resolved to refer the matter to a committee of the council with power to call public attention to the establishment of the scholarship, and to report to tht, council at its next meeting. The coimcii also expressed its warm approval of the establishment by the Government of Research Scholarships, and promised its cordial co-operation in carrying out the scheme.
