LEVIN MATTERS.

[Bt Telegkaph. — Special to The Posr.} LEVIN, This Day. Good rain fell on Sunday night and yesterday morning, and during the greater part of the day a slight drizzle also fell. This will greatly rejoice tho hearts of all, cspeciplly the farmers and those residents of the town who have been dependent entirely upon the waterraces for their supplies. Clouds are still low, and it is to be hoped the promise of a further fall may be realised. The Fire Brigade Committee at a recent meeting drew up a scale of charges ior attending fires outside tho borough, and submitted them to the council at the usual meeting last evening. The scale is that for every mill or part thereof the owner of the property bo charged j £2 for the brigade and £2 for use of | engine, and that ho also bear any other expenses incurred. The councillor^ discussed the proposition, But did not consider the plan workable. Thirteen applications were received by tho council for the- position of gas engineer a-nd considered. Two only, Slessrs. J. W. Blackman. Masterton, and Albert Ford, Wellington, were submitted for final decision, and the council finally decided to appoint Mr. Blackman. Tho site of the gas works was fixed Vy tho council to be on an acre of land in Cambridge-street, subject to the approval of the gas engineer. .The Koads and Streets Committee does not intend wasting much time now that the streets loan is available. A" fairly extensive report of new work required was put before the council and was recommended to be. proceeded with at once. This will bs c great improvement to the town, and put the main streets in thorough order. The council decided to appoint Messrs. Charlesworth and Merrett to furnish a report on a drainage scheme for the borough. Builders are as busy as possible, and new residences are going up in all directions.
