Reports are current in tho city that a general increase in tariff rates is to be given effect to by the firo insurance companies doing business in Wellington. The Post has the authority of a prominent insuranco official for stating that there is no such intention, though there has lately been a hardening of rates in respect of certain "side lines," i.e., rates charged for insurance policies that do not come within the four corners of the insurance, tariff. As an introduction to the series of recitals arranged by the City Council, Mr. Maughan Barnett will give a lecture in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall this evening. The Wellington Loan and Investment Company has removed to new offices on Lambton-quay. •
