Tho prolonged drought is affecting the corporation water. supply, and the water has been^cut off from coal-loading and hydraulic capstans. The council asks consumers to economise water. Mr. Rawson, the newly-appointed Magistrate and Warden has commenced duty. Replying to, a communication from Elder,. Dempster and Co., Liverpool, throught tho Westporl Coal Company re deepening the harbour to accommodate their ships, tho secretary of the Harbour Board writes : Tho railway and port equipment are at present quite capable of dealing with 25,000 tons of coal per week if that quantity is brought for shipment. The board is doing all it reasonably can to render the narbonr and equipment ftilly able to deal with much larger ships than are now trading here, also to deal with a vastly increased output. The new hospital erected at a cost of £8000 will be unofficially opened next week. Tho Premier will probably per. form the official opening ceremony next month. The football population is dissatisfied with tho failure of the New Zealand Rugby Union to allot a British team game to Westnort. The barque Irnm, haa sailed for Xgatupi, New Britain, with coal.
