Lord Ciomer, formerly British Minister in Egypt, speaking at a meeting of tho Society of Arts, said that in tho next fifteen or twenty years twenty millions sterling might very advantageously be spent on irrigation in Egypt and the- Soudan. During Lord Cromer's long and valuable term of office* much good work in ihc way of irrigation was done. The Assiout burrage, Assouan dam, and Ziftch barrage have been of enormous value, and a barrage iit Eseuh, at an estimated cost of one million, is in course of construction. Last year tho Council of M*inistor3 sanctioned another great development — the raising of the heighth of the Assouan dam so that the water leve] will be 23ft higher. The cost is estimated at £1,500,000, including land compensation, but with a water storage two and a quarter times greater, about 950,000 acres will come under cultivation, bringing about an estimated increase in the cotton crop worth £3,000,000 to £4,000,000 annually.
