LOCAL AND GENERAL. «*» . — Sales on ''Change to-day were resricted to Talismans, which changed hands at £2 12s 9d and £2 13s, a fractional gain on yesterday's transactions. Waihi again hardened, the impuse coming from Auckland, at which centre the quotations this morning were buyers £9 3s 6d, sellers £9 4s 6d. The- Wellington quotations moved upward in sympathy to £9 Is bidder, £9 3s wanted. <3oth Waihi and Talisman are in good demand in Auckland, but there, is a comparativc absence of speculative enquiry here. , In tho miscellaneous section Manawatu Rails were- sixpence higher at £2 4s 6d ; no sellers declared, scrip being strongly held. Biver Plates have i an upward tendency, sellers naming £1 j 11s in responso to offers of £1 10s. There were buyers of Canterbury Meat at £8, and Union Steam at £1 12s 6d, sellers of tli3 latter asking another shilling. 'Mr. George Wilson, who has represented the New Zealand shareholders at the meetings of the Talisman Com- 1 pany in London, is a candidate for the directorate, and tho Wellington committee are asking shareholders to give their proxies to secure his election. The annual meeting takes plane in June next, j and proxies must reach London prior to that month. For the erection of pchool buildings at Worser Bay, tho Education TJoard has accepted the tender o c \X. Douglas at £380. Notice of motion was given last night by Councillor Biss in the following terms : — '.'That a committee of fivo members of the council be set up to deal with all matters affecting the fire brigade of tins city ; such committee to submit a comprehensive report within six weeks of the requirements of the brigade, move especially with regard to station, plant, and men. At a special nieeting of tho Haibour Board on Monday next Mr. Dolton will move: — "That the question of the sufficiency of the protective walls in course of erection by the Government in connection with the straightening of tho Wellington-Hutt railway line be referred to the engineer to the board with instructions to report to *-Ue next meeting of the board.
