AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
a racing point of view the Port Nicholson Club's evening meeting on Wednesday was a success, every event bping keenly contested, albeit the finishes weiv confined to the middle markers and limit men. In tho first heat of. the 75 yards handicap Johnson beat Pollock, who finished very fast, by a few inches. Duncan had an easy ■win from Golds in the second heat. Thc> third heat produced a good finish, four men flashing past the post almost ill a line, but in the fourth heat Duncan and Pike were clear of tho rest. In the final Mr. Leslie effected a splendid start. Duncan quickly £ot into his. stride and running strongly bioko the tape an easy winner by a full yard in 7 3-ssec, Johnson getting tho best of a close struggle for second place. The winner has improved wonderfully sinco last season, when his best performance was a second to Goodbehere in the 220 at Auckland last Easter, and has the makings of a champion sprinter in him. The two mile was a great struggle for the better part of tho journey between Thompson, Finn, and Bennett, but at the business end there was only one in it, Thompson winning easily by about fifteen i yards in lOmin 6 3-ssec — excellent timo for the track. Tho winner is a game runner, and would win many more races if he were to keep closer up to his neld in the earlier stages of a racr. With a iield of twenty-three starters out of an entiy of twenty-seven the quarter mile was interesting. In «. desperate finish Turton just managed to calrli Golds a yawl from the tape, and win by the smallest margin, with Gordon ;i \\ird or two away third, and Casey and Cunningham (who had great difficulty in getting round tho big 'field) close up.
