UNDER THE HUDSON RIVER. ENGINEERING FEATS.

President Roosevelt touched, a button at Washington, and inaugurated the running of trains through .tho first pair of Hudson river tunnels' beneath Manhattan .Island, and Now Jersey. These are the forerunners of< othcre which are being built at an aggregate cost of sixty millions sterling. The cost of tho wholo ■ undertaking, which includes a longer section than the two mentioned, is estimated at £20,000, 000. Tho idea is to connect NeWaterßey »vith New York City and Long Island. Tho Pennsylvania Railroad Company is carrying out' the gigantic work. According to Hagdl, 'tiionorthorn^cnd of tho connecting line will have to bo carried on a viaduct, 'so, as to clear"'three urms of the East rivor. The most important part of this viaduct will be a bridge over Hell Gate, which will havo a span of 1000 feet between the'"abutments, which in themselves will be monumental stone towers, 200 feet high, with granite bases. 1 Foilr tofccfcO'ill bo carried, which are to be embedded in stone ballast, . with a view to rendering tho structure noiseless. The permanent way will be 140 feet above the water, and the top of tho arches »vill be 160 feet higher. Some 80,000 tons of steel will bo used in the construction^ of tho viaduct. Its total length, including the approaches, wjll be three miles.
