Correspondence was received from the Mauriceville, Eketahuna, Carterton, and Levin Councils, regarding tho comments made at the board's pre-uous meeting as to the way in which recipients of charitable aid in those parts spent their money. The letters showed that enquiries had been made into severrl cas.es, and that in odd instances alterations had been made. It was, however, stated by one board that the circumstances of applicants varied, and "a hard and fa^t rule could not be fixed as to what form of aid was to be granted." The town clerk of Levin wrote that he noticed there was somo stir as to the way in which the recipients of charitable aid spent their money, but it seemed io him that was a minor matter; the chief thing was for the local authority to allow a fair and just sum bs,sed on the price of necessities, and then if the recipient preferred a tin of sardines to a couple of pounds of meat the clerk did not see that it made any difference to the local - body. ■ It was resolved to discuss the Hospital and Charitable Institutions Bill next month, when there will be a full meeting of the board.
