Mr. J. Maughan Barnott left for Dunedin last evening. Mr. R. Lee, chairman of tho Wellington Education Boatd, left yesterday on a holiday visit to tho North. Mr. Hone Heke, M.P., proceeds to Auckland to-morrow whero he will conduct tho Native Land Commission through the Northern Maori district. Mr. F. Reed, Inspecting Engineer of the Mines Department, will leave for the North of Auckland district to-mor-row on official business. The Rev. C. W. Maclaverty, for some time past curate of St. Peter's Church, leaves next Saturday on a visit to England. A prosontation will bo made to Mr. MaclaverLy this evening. Dr. Pomare, Native Heolth Officer, has returned from an official visit to the Chatham Islands. He speaks highly of the industry of the Maoris there, and their attention to sanitary conditions of livingMr. E. E. Rawson, tho newlyappointed Stipendiary Magistrate for the West Coast, occupied a seat on the Bench with Dr. A. M'Artßur, S.M., this morningMr. H. Morgau, who has been engaged us science master to tho Auckland Technical College, was a passenger from, London by the Arawa fco-day. He is accompanied by Mrs. Morgan. Mr. J. A. Gilruth, Chief Government Veterinarian, who for the last few weeks ha^ been visiting the Auckland province on departmental business, is expected to return *o Wellington this evening. A Stratford Press Association telegram states that Mr. J. B. Hine, who contested tho Patea seat at last general election, has been selected as tho Opposition candidate for the Stratford seat at the next general election. Messrs. E. Wahren and F. Woodward, of H. Gibbons and Cos. nursery staff, Upper Hutt, who are about to start business on their own account, were the recipients on Monday evening ox farewell gifts from their fellow employees. Sir. W. Barrett made the presentation. The Rev. J. T. Pinfold, M-A-, of Rangiora, president of the New Zea« land Christian Endeavour Union, who has been visiting the local union duriug the past few days, left Wellington today for Auckland to attend the Methodist Conference which Is to bo held there. Mr. A. D.< Wilkinson, a former master st Wellington College, who left for South Africa 6ome years ago, in search of health, has returned to New Zealand. He has B"ix months' leave of absence and is at present spending some time in Dunedin with relatives. He will arrive in Wellington shortly. At a meeting of the Hospital Trustees held this mening, a vote of condolence was passed with the family of the late Dr. Tripe. The chairman of the trustees., Hon. C. M. Luke, M.L.C., testified to the good services rendered in the pasi by Dr. Tripe. There was no one, the chairman continued, who had renmore self-denying services to the sick and suffering of the community than the deceasod gentleman.
