An incident during the voyage of the British ship Dechtnont from Sydney to Wellington on 23rd January was investigated before Mr. Riddell, S.M., to-day, when Robert Ness, carpenter, was charged with having assaulted Frederick Schlindcr, an A.B. Evidehceshowed that tho mate ordered the complainant to work. The complainant had been in trouble with other members of the crew at various times since the vessel left, Grcnnock. On tho date in question he shook his fist in the face of the mate, and the carpenter stepped in >md struck him (comp'iinant) in the eye, inflictint; an injury which had to bo treated by a doctor.' After healing witnesses at length his Worship hold that the weight of evidence wa3 totally against the complainant. Tho carpenter, he said, was a petty ofne-er, and had some right to interfere. The information was dismissed, with £1 10s costs. Mr P. Jackson prosecuted, and Mr. Blair defended. A social evening will be held in fho Wellington Hall, Boiilcott-strcet, on Wednesday.
