AMERICA'S FLEET. THE INVITATION FROM AUSTRALIA.

The authorities at Washington arc highly gratified at Mr. Deakin's invitatibii to Rear-Admiral Evan3's fleet to visit Australia. Mr. Metcalfe, Secretary to the Navy, sdys the Navy Department is grateful for the cordiality shown by the invitation, which will receive serious consideration. LONDON, 22nd February. The New York correspondent of The Times says the reply which has been forwarded to Mr. Deakin is interesting, as it is the first respbnsible utterance confirming tho rumour that the fleet will undertake a world's tour. THE ISSUING OF THE INVITATION. (Received February 24, 10.21 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. It transpires that Mr. Deakin, in De'oember last, wrote to the Hon. White'law Reid, American Ambassador to the Court of James, whom ho met several times, when in England, asking his opinion about a visit from Admiral Evans's fleet. The reply being favourable, Mr. Deakin then, through the Governor-General (Lord North<y>te), forwarded the invitation.
