ART EXHIBITION. MISS D. K. RICHMOND'S WORK.

A private view of some works by Miss D. K. P.ichmond, of Wellingto.i, was held in the gallery of Messrs. M'Oregor Wright and Co., on Saturday. Tho walls were not en'irely covered with the artist's work, but there was sufficient hung to confirm the belief that in Miss Bichmond New Zealand possesses a con.'.cientious and truthful artist. In the water colours she is happy iii her quest of colour. When Nature "an'ayn herself in her best. Miss Richmond 1 seems to be present, and she bears away with her a precious vision nf Iho bounty clis has seen. This is made clear in a number of studies of animals aaid trees in water colours, and in her 7\laori studies, of. which No. 6D (in oils) is a telling example. Tli3 variety of hues is aimo&t kaleidoscopic in arrangement, but none is too obtrucivo; on tho contrary, tho array is toothing and agreeable. Tho Maori v.-oir.an supplies by hi?v toilet such colour as is r>jdi»ar>!y lacking anionr' tho peoples of English-speaking countries. It is not every one who 'is willing or able to uliliss this.' Miss Eiehmnnd can and doe^. In hor water .-(-]- onrs, rlonn on brown* paper, and, i,i some in^tancr!:, vith charrna] an Hell^she is fortunate. Freedom of Iroatmentj pfrength of colouring,' and firmness of reaving, arc con'piciums featuroG of tho3o wholly satisfyinK drawingr. A m-M-2 suggestion of form, and a [=%■> clsvcr dashes of the brush, and— behold, a picture . This ir. exemplified in> the drawing on brown paper of a mother sncklme a child. This picture, apart from all the others in tho collection, is w?il worth seeing. Somo others in the exhibition have been exhibited and de-BCi-ibsd before ; but all bespeak tho certainty, strength; and vigour of a, man rather than of .a woman artist. The collection includes torr.c splendid examples of Miss F. Hodgkins's water-colour work, some of which Los *leo been shown before, but again most welcome ; also rome drawings, especially of ships by H. Aikimon, which will r.mply rcpav careful and intelligent inspection.
