WATER FOR LOWER HUTT. A NEW SUPPLY.
Representatives of tho press, in company with the Borough Engineer (Mr. Kix-Trott), made a tour of inspection this morning of the recently completed waterworks at Lower Hutt. The works, which are to be officially opened tomorrow afternoon, were designed by Messrs Meason and Mai chant, in conjunction with the Borough Engineer. Provision is made for a daily supply of a million gallons. The work of reticulation involved the use of 2000 ft of lOin pipe, 12,000 ft of 7in, 2000 ft of 6in, 8000 ft of sin, lO.OOUtt of 4in, and 92,HUOii of 3in. During tho inspection Mr. Rix-Trott explained that the water was obtained from ten artesian bores, three inches in diameter, which discharged into a receiving tank whence the Water is pumped into a reservoir having a storage capacity of a million " gallons, or, if necessary, into the mams direct. The reservoir afforded a pressure of 50ib to the square inch, sufficient to cope with fires in an incipient stage. Should a fire become serious the water could be pumped direct into the mains, giving a pressure and supply equal to anything Chat might be required. Two 70 h.p. pumping engines have each a delivering capacity of /50 gallons per minute against a head -of 120 ft, and a pressure of 4UO gallons per minute each against a head of 200 ft, thus giving a supply of something like one million gallons, or enough for 40,000 people at the rate of 25,0(70 gallons per head. 'I he approximate complete cost of the work is £18,000. Tested by the Lower iiutt fire brigade last night the water attained a height ot nearly 80it.
