AMATEUR ATHLETICS. THE NEW ZEALAND TEAM.
In its report of the amateur championship meeting at Dunedin the Otago D.iily Times states that in the 100 yards Flat Handicap Henderson had his chances spoiled by losing the first heat. Ho made a gamo attempt to get up, but was beaten by T. S. Ruddock by a f,oob or so. It was a capital raco. Fisher had tho same fate in the fourth heat, which R. Mitchell won, beating the Wellington representative by 2ft. Only ( the -winners of heats started in the final.' In regard to the walking events the Eamo paper says: — "Kerr' annexed the One-mile Walk, Stubberfield being second. Kerr's style of walking -was admired by all the judges, and it was agreed on all hands that, even when spurting, there was, not the least suspicion of 'lifting' in it. gerr won tha Two-mile Walk, with Deans (of Dunedin) second and Stubberfield (of Canterbury) third. Kcrr's time 'was 14mia 40 2-ssec. Tho Zealand amateur record for the distance is 14min 12 3-5 sec, which was A. Brady's time at Auckland in 1896, The programme wrongly, stated the New Zealand amateur record 1 33 15min 7sec, and it was thought by many of the spectators that Kerr had signally lowered this time." • The Post's correspondent states "tha members "of, the Wellington team had a, very quiet trip to Dunedin. During tha progress of the sports on Saturday a gale was blowing. Henderson did nofc feel too well after his efiort in the 100 flat handicap and did not comEete in any other event for which he ad entered. Kerr -walked splendidly; and. got a great reception. He completely outclassed Stubberfield. Trembath joins the team at Bluff." -.--,. ,'
