PROTECTION OF ANIMALS.
The fortnightly meeting of tho Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held iast evening* in the Chamber of Commerce.' The President (Mr. J. llott) waa in tho chair. In the report presented by Mr Seed, the society's inspector, several cases of alleged cruelty to horses were dealt with. Since the last meeting ,the society had been successful, in two court cases, heavy fines being inflicted in each. A letter was' received from the City Council stating that -the water trough situated in front of the Esplanade Hotel at Thorndon, will receive consideration. Acknowledgement of subscriptions totalling £7 Is 6d from the following persons was made :— Ross and Glendinnmg, Ltd., £1 Is; Messrs O. Beere and Messrs. M'Keegan Bros., 10s 6d each ; Messrs. M. W. Richmond, Young and Tripe, ,and Findlay, Dalziell and Co., 10s each; Lady Stout, Mi?s M'Leau, Mesdames Coffey, W H. Moorhouse, J. P. Firth, Scutt, Messrs. E. Arnold, S Mayer, H. G. Harkness, 5s eac& ; Mrs. A. M'Dougal, Messrs. Caldwell, B. Hector, R. C. Brien, E. Tregear, 8.D.N., "Friend," W. C. Hemery, Andrew and Manthell, 2s 6d each.
