FIRE ifl ADELAIDE-ROAD.
Shortly after 2 o'clock this afternoon a fire broke out at the residence of Mr. Alexander J. Rand, Adelaide-road. Mr. Rand is proprietor of the adjoining sash and door factory. The outbreak, which was discovered by Mr. F. W. Gouth, occurred in an up-stairs bedroom on the south sido of the house, and near the roof. All the family were in the building at the time, but were downstairs. Mr. Rand immediately got to work with his chemical engine, xue fire, however, being inside the wall, could not be got at very well. By the time tho brigade arrived the flames had spread to adjoining rooms and burst through the roof Tho blaze was extinguished at about 2.20 p.m. Three rooms and tho roof have been destroyed. Considerable damage to tho furniture was done by water. Constable Wright, of Mount Cook Station, was speedily on tho scene, and assisted the firemen in their work. The origin of tho outbreak is unknown, but it is thought it may have been caused by a spark from an adjoining chimney. Tho building is insured in the Commercial Union for £600 and the furniture for £300 in the United Office
