THE WEATHER WINS. RETIREMENT OF THE PROPHETS.
Disheartened, baffled, the prophets have abandoned tho weather. To-day's official forecast does not make any hazard at rain Professional and amateur alike, tho seers have apparently decided that the weather declines just now to come within their ken. The weather is master of tha situation ; it has the sky to itself, and nobody is brave enough to say what it is likely to do next. A wooden "astral handl' at the Opera House last night indicated, by two taps, that rain would come this week, but this assurance is purely playfxil speculation in response to an anxious enquiry. The wind conies from the south and veers to the north, reverts to the south and returns to the north ; tho clouds come and go ; tho barometer bobs up and down, and the drought continues. One institution does not go up and down; it 13 the reservoir level at Wainui, which is steadily descending. At 9 o'clock this morning no station in New Zealand had rain, and tho barometer seemed to hint that showers wero far away from most places. WELCOME RAIN . [BT TELKGK.irH. — PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CARTERTON, This Day. The weather has turned southerly and is colder. Rain is falling, and there is every appearance of its continuance.
