ENGLAND v. NEW SOUTH WALES HOME TEAM SCORES WELL.
By TclcgTaph. — Prets .' jociation. — Copyright. SYDNEY, 16th February. The return match between the English team and the Now South Wales representatives was continued yesterday, the weather being fine and the wicket in excellent condition. The homo men, who had lost, when play ended on Friday, one wicket for 10 runs, resumed their innings. Very soon the board showed four wickets down for 85, and the outlook did not look promising, Waddy and Macartney were presontly associated, however, and they collared bowling, adding 86 for tho sixth wicket. Then the Waduy-Bowd&n partnership provided brilliant and lively cricket. Following are the scores :— ENGLAND. ■ Jirst innings 298 NEW SOUTH WALES. First innings. Bardsley, c Braund, b Blythe ... 3 Barnes, c Rhodes, b Blytho ... 19 Trumper, b Blytha 14 Diamond, c Young, b Blythe ... 7 Hopkins, c Hutchmgs, ' b Fieldoi 13 Macartney, b Braund 96 Wa,ddy, not out 101 Bowden, c Jones, b Hobbs 87 Newton, c Hutchings, b Hobbs ... 0 Minnett, b_ Fipldcr ... .., ... 3 Worry, not but 1 Extras ... ■. 10 Total for nine wickets ... ... 354 NOTES ON THE PLAY. The New South Wales total of 354 for nine wickets is a much better performance than tho showing of the home side in the first meeting between the teams. -The scoro is very uneven in its character, however, us three of tho men made nearly all the runs between them. Waddy is credited with the same scoro as the whole side wa3 dismissed for in Us first innings by the Englishmen in November last, viz., 101, whilst Macartney's 96 exactly equals their second innings in that memorable •match. Waddy is a fine batsman and out field, and might very well have a trial in the next test match. Ho put up three centuries last season for his State — viz, 129 vevsus Rest of Australia, 110 at Freemantle, and 100 against Queensland. His brother, the Rev. E. F. Waddy, who snapped so well a short, time back, had an off season last year. Bowden is played mostly for his bowliug, but ho also has the- knack of making good scores. He i 3 in his thirtythird year, and is not likely to improvo much. Newton, who has failed in his first innings, plays for Petersham. Two well known men in Sydney cricket — ■ viz, Diamond and Hopkins, are not in form this (.cason. Had the Englishmen been visiting Australia a year ago both men must have represented tho Commonwealth, as they hold the two highest aggregates in big cricket, and stood second and third respectively in the batting averages for the season.
