SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP. WEBB v. TRESIDDER.

[Er Telegraph.— Spzcul to The Post.] WANGANUI This Day Information is to hand that Fogwell has arrived at Auckland, so doubtless he will bo in Wanganui in tno course of a day or two. Arnst is also expected at any time now. With thesa scullers coming, the prospects of promoting the handicap race are very blight indeed, and from what I can learn the event is practically certain to take place. It will probably bo rowed on the Saturday following tho big race, and it is anticipated that the starters will include Tresidder, Webb, Arnst, Ford, Fogwell, and, probably, Neilsen. If such a contest is •u-rangacl it should be decidedly interesting. The distance would probably be fixed, at a mile and a half. Tresidder had his last row on the bottom coursa last evening, when he covered about four and a half miles, rowing fieely, and with powerful strokes, all tho way. His weight has not altered recently, lemaining ab 12st. 121 b. He looks very hard, however, and his admirers have every reason to be well satisfied, with his condition. These who know him be?t s.iy he never showed I belter form than ho is doing now. His trainer declares that Dick g-ets in a stroke moro to the minute on this sido than he was able to do in Australia, and he is very confident. Tho challenger and Ford rowed their bkilfs up to Upokongaro this morning. They will do the balance of their training on the course proper, putting up it the hotel fit Upokontjaxo. Webb <is settled down very cemfort:I ably in his camp. He had a couple of row 3 yesterday over portions of tho course, and to-day did a solid row fro.n start to finish. Though he did not attempt any wntch-breaking, it wa3 a j satisfactory performance. The chainj pion is varying his work now, inasmuch, as he is doing some walking over the 'hills in the vicinity ox his camp, having » set-to with his trainer with the gloves now and again, and doing breathing exercises regularly. He is in great heart. ' ,a Visitors ara already arrivi^ in town, mostly from the back blocks.. It is estimated that Katrick's steamers will be able to transport from eight thousand to ten thousand people' up to the finishing point. As hundreds will be- able to 1 gt> by private launches, boats, etc., boI sides somo five thousand or so by road, I it is estimated that at lea^t 20,000 peoj pie can be got up and down on the day, I providing, of course, that sufficient numbers patronise the early morning boats. A LOCAL REVIVAL. frr.ESS association.] WANG AN 01, 11th February. • There nas been p great revival of interest in local aquatics as the result of the Stanbury-Wcbb pnd Webb-Tresidder sculling matches. To-night a race between M'Donaid and Marshall, of the ■ Wanganui Rowing Club, resulted in a, win for M'Donaid. At tho "same time there were .upon tho river two "eights," several fouroared boats, double sculls, - and single aculls. Tresidder, who was to have gone up the river to Upokongaro to-day, remainpa in town to witness the M'DonaldMarshall mutch, he haying taken a lively interest in th& training operations of tho contestants and given them useful hints.
