[Bt TEiEGiiArn. — Smoiai, to Tub PoflT.] AUCKLAND, This Day. , Speaking to a Heiald reporter, Mr. Charles Rhodes, local director of tho \\ aihi Goldmining Company, who, has 'just returned frqm a motoring tour, said that he/and Messrs. 11. P. Barry and W. 15. Ley land, who made the same trip, took the first cars through from Taumaruuui to Taihapc, en route to Wellington, The roatlb even in tho new parts on tho Main Trunk joute were much better than those from Napier lo Auckland. The latter he described as being in the most fhrunpJul condition possible. "As far at the Auckland movinco'is concerned," Mr. Rhodes declared, "we get the finger posts and down south they get tho roads." Tho motor'l&ts ha'ri. an interesting trip travelling along a good many, of the service roads built for the railway between Tauinarunui and Tailiape — a distance of over 100 miles, v.hich was covered in one day. Six biidgeless creeks had to bo negotiated, t'hure were threo cars on r the dip, and all ran without thp. slightest hitch. They returned frcm Wellington ria the ltinrutaka Ranges and Napier. Between the latter pkue 'and Jlotorua the road wps cxtrfnoiy dinu-ult, very soft and- heavy. All ths south was. burned up nnd dry. The motorists were not inconvenienced by the bush fires, except for having to put up with a little smoke.
